A Letter from a Miracle Mom

Our Children’s Miracle Network family wants to thank you for your support in miracles over the years.

While the rest of the world seems uncertain, some things remains the same—kids still need our help. Kids like Collins, the 2020 Sanford Children’s Miracle Network Champion, whose mom wanted to share with you the impact of your donation as a miracle mom:

“Dearest Children’s Miracle Network supporter,

Just a week after our first child, Collins, was born, we received the devastating phone call that Collins’ newborn screen showed she had cystic fibrosis. A few days later, we took our first trip to Sanford Children’s Hospital. Our sweet girl, just 12 days old at the time, had a sweat chloride test to officially be diagnosed with cystic fibrosis. It confirmed that our lives were changing far beyond what we imagined as first time parents.

When you see her, you’d never know anything was wrong—to the outside world, Collins looks like every other 6-year-old, running around and driving her mom and dad crazy during this quarantine period. But for that to be possible, Collins spends 30 minutes, twice a day hooked up to a vest that shakes her body to break up the thick, sticky mucus in her lungs. She requires enzymes before she eats so that her body can properly digest food.  She’s extremely susceptible to illness, especially those affecting the lungs.

We’re lucky to have Sanford Children’s so close to home. The staff there takes such great care of Collins when she does get sick and needs to see her specialist or is admitted. We have regular checkups with pulmonology and GI to make sure there aren’t concerns. Everyone at the Castle knows our family and makes us feel welcome. Even more special than that, we know that everything they do and say comes from the heart.

With mother’s day in just a couple days, I want to thank you for your past support of Sanford Children’s Miracle Network. I will never celebrate this special day without appreciating each life I was able to bring to this world. Thank you for caring for my little ones. Thank you for believing that each life is worth fighting for and for filling in where so desperately needed. Happy Mother’s Day, may you know of your importance in this beautiful world. YOU are MY gift this year.”

–Katie, Collins’ Mom
